Eric Stern was a big, outspoken guy, known as "Sunglasses Rick" around Monte Rio because he was seldom seen without his shades.

He claimed a colorful past, including a stint as a bodyguard for radical leader Abbie Hoffman and a part in the protests during the Democratic convention in Chicago in 1968.

But when the 55-year-old crashed his Harley-Davidson on Bohemian Highway 18 months ago, it wasn't initially clear that his death had been as dramatic as his life.
