NOOBIE Bike Questions

I just sold my gas guzzling Jeep and I'm looking to get into the sport bike scene. I haven't been on a bike in about 5 years, and even then it was a 125 dirt bike.
I've been looking at the Kawasaki Ninja 250R - it's cheap, doesn't suck on gas, is noobie friendly, and from the reviews that I've been reading - it's actually pretty fun to drive as well. Not to mention that I'm a noob and I'm a bit hesatant to get into a 600 just yet.
IF I wind up going with the 250R it'll likely end up my wife's bike in about six months to a year, when I do get a 600.....
SO - am I waisting time and money going with the Kawi 250R first? Are there any other bikes that are "noobie friendly?" Any one got anything good (or bad) to say about the baby 250?
