Buying a ''gray market'' bike

Right, we get the shaft in the U.S., with the all the cool new bikes going to Europe and Asia. Has anyone imported a "gray market" bike? Is importing really gray market? What kind of hurdles are involved?
For example, Canada still has the naked GS500 and they have the beautiful Kawa Z750 (not the Z750S).
Is it too much of a PITA?
