Barber Superbike - What a Dogfight!

By Sean Alexander, May. 15, 2004
Superbike Race 1, Saturday, May 15th, 2004

What a Barn Burner! At the start, Aaron Yates lowsided in the 3rd turn, but re-joined and made his way back up to 20th position, before a second off-track excursion ended his race. Ben Bostrom streaked away to open a 1 second lead by the end of lap 1, but lowsided out of the race, 2 laps later. Duhamel harassed Eric Bostrom, for the first three or four laps, before getting by and moving away for a lonely 3rd place throughout the race. E Boz and Attack Kawasaki mounted Josh Hayes stayed in close-contact throughout the remainder of the race, but were unable to match the pace of the top-3. At the front of the pack, Jake Zemke and Mat Mladin traded positions in an all-out dogfight, from laps 3 to 7, then Mladin seemed to back off a bit, to preserve his tires. Zemke pulled-out a 2 second lead and everything looked rosy for young Zemke, until 9 laps from the finish, when Zemke came up the inside to lap Dean Mizdal. Unfortunately Mizdal didnt know Zemke was there and closed the door. Zemke kneed and elbowed Mizdal wide with a noticeable bump, but no harm was done and Zemke maintained his comfortable 2+ second lead over Mladin. With 6 laps to go, Mladin re-lit the fuse and ran Zemke down. By the white flag, Mladin had closed to within 6/10s of a second. Half-way around the final lap, Zemke had a bit of Déjà vu .. He was balked by a lapper and next thing he knew Mladin appeared to his left and his lead was lost. Mladin held Zemke off and won by a nose.
