It's official! Rossi to Yamaha

By George Obradovich, Nov. 10, 2003
Italian newspapers report today that Valentino Rossi has officially signed with Yamaha, quoting Yamaha team director L. Jarvis. The two-year contract is worth 10 million euros a year (roughly $10 mil.). In addition to that, Rossi will be free to seek sponsors for his helmet and riding gear, as well as other private sponsors. The current estimate for that income is at least another 5 million euros a year, but the amount could increase. Rossi's partner will be Carlos Checa, while Marco Melandri will go to team Yamaha-Gauloises. The contract will make Rossi the highest paid Italian sportsman, well above the amount received by such soccer stars as Del Piero and Totti. Rossi will join the team on January 1st, and will make his debut April 18th in South Africa. The article is in Italian.
