2003 MX Attendance Record

The following is a press release from OMS Sports:

FLORENCE, Ky., (August 5, 2002) - With four races remaining on the 2003 AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship tour, the National Promoters Group today announced that the 2003 Outdoor National season has been the highest-attended season in the history of the sport - topping last year's record-setting crowds with ease.

Through eight races nearly 200,000 fans - the most hardcore of all motorsports fans - have battled the at times wet and muddy conditions and traveled from all over the various regions to be part of a record-setting trend in Outdoor National attendance. Last year attendance figures at the Nationals topped the 20,000 average mark for the first time. Thus far this year they've averaged in excess of 22,000!

So from the grassy, glacial moraine-carved hills of Unadilla to the majestic Douglas Fir-lined track of Washougal, motocross fans - many of which come as well to race the amateur days - have spoken as to what's become the most popular form of motorcycle racing, if not one of the top forms of spectator motorsports in the USA!

"I think what sets us apart from other forms of motorsports such as NASCAR, NHRA and the IRL is the freedom our fans enjoy once they purchase a ticket," said Ralph Huffman, promoter of the Washougal round. "At an Outdoor National motocross race you're not limited to, say, Seat 131, Section 56. You're more than welcome to walk around the entire track, enjoy all sorts of views and take pictures of your favorite riders from every possible angle, rather than watch a car go around Turn Three all day."

Never in the history of the NPG have the hard-working promoters combined on so many attendance records in a single year. Count 'em! No less than seven of the first eight rounds set attendance records, with the lone race that didn't - Mt. Morris - coming within a hundred or so fans (on a cloudy, rain-threatening day) of setting its mark. Hangtown was giant this year, with 25,000 plus packing the innovative State-run facility to witness Round Two of the series. Unadilla was back - in a big way - with nearly 25,000 fans of its own in the rural upstate New York setting. And Jonathan Beasley of Budds Creek packed in his biggest crowd to date - by far - with more than 20,000 fans at Budds Creek MX Park. "These families that attend the Nationals are the core of the sport," said Beasley. "Our fans are the ones that financially support the motocross industry. Many own dirt bikes and ride. And that's something you don't see nearly as much in other forms of motorsport, especially car racing."

Here are the Outdoor Nationals attendance figures thus far:
