New or Used Bike?

I have never riden a bike, but will be taking a course next month.
I have always wanted a Harley, but some biker friends have suggested I buy a used bike first, since I will possibly dump the first bike I get.
But, since I really want a Harley, and this is Harley's 100th anniversary, I thought it would be cool to buy a new bike this year.
I know I have to make the descision on my own, but would appreciate any advice.
