FIM marks World Environment Day

SBK racers to attend tree-planting at Miller Motorsports Park
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, May. 28, 2008
The Federation International de Motocyclisme will observe World Environment Day at several FIM-sanctioned events, including this weekends superbike racing at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

In addition to the World Superbike stop, the FIM will observe World Environment Day at this weekends World Motocross Championship event in Leicestershire, England, the Sidecar Motocross in Cingoli, Italy, the World Trial Championship stop in Motegi, Japan, and the Long Track championship race in Mulmshorn, Germany, as well as the MotoGP race in Catalunya, Spain which will be held on World Environment Day itself, June 5.

Without a doubt, one of the main characteristics of our century is the increasing global awareness towards the World Environment, says Vito Ippolito, FIM president. From all parts of the world, innumerable private and public institutions are trying to elevate environmental consciousness. Our planets welfare depends on each and every one of us whether its a small daily task, or the development of a complex technology geared towards the same goal.

As part of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)s Under the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, the FIM will hold tree-planting ceremonies at each of this weekends events. The FIM will plant six ash trees on the lawn near the main gate at Miller Motorsports Park, May 30 at 5:15 pm. World Superbike riders Troy Bayliss, Carlos Checa and Max Neukirchner are scheduled to attend the ceremony.

We are very pleased to help the FIM observe World Environment Day, says Alan Wilson, CEO of Miller Motorsports Park. The six new ash trees will nicely complement the 300 trees we planted around the facility last year.

The Billion Tree Campaign encourages organizations and individuals to collectively plant a billion trees each year. The FIM signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the UNEP in 2006 and promotes environmental consciousness within the racing community.

The FIM has its undivided attention focused on the unfolding evolution of ideas to solve this global problem, and calls upon all its followers and stakeholders to contribute with all of our efforts towards the preservation of the World Environment, says Ippolito.
