Elena Myers nets historic first win

First win by a woman in AMA Pro Road Racing
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, May. 18, 2010
Infineon Raceway played host to a number of historic firsts this past weekend. The first North American TTXGP electric race created the most headlines, but history was also being made in AMA Supersport action at the Sonoma, Calif., circuit.

Suzuki GSX-R600 rider Elena Miles won AMA Supersport Race One at Infineon, making her the first female to record an AMA Pro Road Racing win.

Myers qualified seventh on the grid and jumped up to fifth after the start. Myers was in the front pack behind pole-sitter Cameron Beaubier. Myers was joined by Joey Pascarella, Huntley Nash, Jake Gagne and Tyler OHara. On the seventh lap however, Gagne crashed at turn ten, drawing a red flag. The race was restarted with 12 laps to go, and this time, it was OHara who got a strong start with Pascarella and Myers behind him.

Pascarella took the lead not long afterward, and soon Myers also passed OHara. Beaubier recovered from a poor restart and began to challenge Myers. The two riders swapped positions a couple of times before Pascarella went wide and high-sided, bringing out a second red flag on lap 10.

Because more than half of the scheduled 18 laps were completed, the race was stopped with the final results determined by the running order after lap nine. At the time, Pascarella was leading with Myers in second. Because Pascarella was the cause of the red flag, however, he was moved to the end of the running order, pushing Myers into first for the win.

Joey Pascarella (25) crashed on lap 10 of Race One, stopping the race and giving Elena Myers (21) a historic first win for a woman in AMA Pro Road Racing.

I got a great start off the front row, which worked out really well for me. I was in second and Tyler (OHara) was in first and I passed Tyler and Joey was still ahead of me ... Sorry, Im just on another planet right now, says Myers. The race went really good for me, and some people made mistakes and I took advantage of it. I dont think its quite sunk in yet. Its crazy.

Beaubier and OHara joined Myers on the historic podium.

I think its huge for the sport. Elena just broke the barrier as far as women on a motorcycle at the top level, says OHara. Im proud of her and happy and I like racing with her.

Myers would finish fifth in the second race, putting her second in the AMA Pro Supersport West Championship with 92 points, 45 points behind the leader, Pascarella.
