EICMA 2010: Honda Crossrunner Breaks Cover

800cc V4 "crossover" debuts in Milan

After weeks of teasers and subtle hints, Honda finally introduced its new V4 “crossover” at the 2010 EICMA show in Milan.

Dubbed the Crossrunner, the new model is what Honda describes as a combination of “the flexibility and exciting attitude of a Naked performance machine with the upright riding position and rugged appearance of an adventure bike.” Despite the adventure bike influence, Honda is clear about the Crossrunner being a road-only machine.

Honda finally unveiled its "crossover" V4, the new Crossrunner.

Honda says the Crossrunner was designed with two concepts in mind, stability and ease of use. To that end, Honda designed the Crossrunner to offer an upright seating position with wide handlebars. The multi-layered fairing was developed from over 120 wind tunnel sessions to improve “stability-enhancing airflow”. The Crossrunner was also developed for pillion riding, with wind protection and comfort for the passenger taken into account.

The Crossrunner is powered by a 782cc 90 degree V4 VTEC engine similar to that found on the VFR800, claiming 100hp at 10000rpm and 54 ft-lb. at 9500rpm. Fueling the engine is a 5.7 gallon tank for longer rides before needing to refuel. Honda says the Crossrunner has a curb weight of about 530 pounds.

Though the Crossrunner has some adventure bike styling, Honda makes it clear it is designed as an on-road motorcycle.

Suspension is provided by a 43mm cartridge-type front fork and a Pro-link rising-rate linkage system at the rear, both with adjustable damping.

The Crossrunner comes standard with Honda’s Combined ABS technology with twin 296mm floating discs and three-piston calipers on the front and a 256mm disc with a twin-piston caliper on the rear.

Honda seems to like using the "cross" prefix in its products. Honda's automotive division introduced a mid-sized SUV and wagon crossover in 2009 called the Accord Crosstour.
