Danny "Magoo" Chandler: 1959-2010
Chandler passed away the night of May 4 at his home in Yuba City, Calif., from illnesses related to his paralysis.
A top motocross racer in the 80s, Chandlers career highlight was winning the U.S. 500cc Motocross Grand Prix in 1982. Chandler also represented the United States in the 1982 Motocross des Nations and the Trophee des Nations where he became to first rider to win both motos in both events during the same year.
Chandlers career was cut short after a crash at a supercross race in Paris in December 1985. The crash left Chandler paralyzed.
After his accident, Chandler began promoting mountain bike races and was a key supporter of the drug awareness program DARE.
In November 2009, Bob Hurricane Hannah began an industry fundraising challenge to buy a van for Chandler to travel the country and speak at schools and hospitals for the Danny Magoo Motorcycle Safety Clinics. The fundraising effort reached its goal in March. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was already purchased and was due for delivery in the summer. A graphic scheme for the van designed by graphic designer Leighton Hubbell was unveiled earlier in the day of Chandlers passing.
