Rizla Suzuki rider Loris Capirossi suffered a deep cut in his right arm after highsiding during practice for the Dutch TT on June 26.

The accident occurred during the afternoon practice session at the Assen track in The Netherlands. Capirossi made his return to the track in the morning session after missing last week’s race at Donington Park due to a broken hand, also on his right arm.

Capirossi was leaning into a broad left turn when his rear wheel appeared to lose grip and slid wide before regaining traction, causing Capirossi and his bike to spill.

The Suzuki GSV-R fell onto its left side and Capirossi’s right arm appeared to be caught underneath it as he and the bike slid into the corner. Once off the track, the GSV-R slid over Capirossi and flipped over several times after it reached the gravel, ripping the left side panel to shreds. Capirossi meanwhile rolled to a stop in the gravel and was able to get back to his feet quickly.

“After this morning’s practice I was quite happy, because my hand was working well and there was no pain. I felt that I was riding quite well and settling back into things,” says Capirossi. “In the afternoon I came in and put on a new tire and the first lap out it felt quite good, but when I changed down from sixth to fourth gear and leaned on the left side I lost control and the bike jumped me out of the seat.”

Rizla Suzuki team manager Paul Denning says that Loris Capirossi's broken hand was not a factor in the crash.Capirossi was treated for a deep laceration on his right forearm by the Clinica Mobile. Medical staff also evaluated the broken hand and determined that it sustained no further damage from the crash.

“I think it is necessary to make it clear that the crash was nothing to do with his recent hand injury and it was just one of those things that happen in racing,” says Rizla Suzuki team manager Paul Denning. “He was lucky that he didn’t break anything or cause more damage to the original injury, because it is a really fast place to crash. Unfortunately the bike got on top of him and ripped a sizeable piece of flesh from his right forearm.”

Capirossi will not take part in the rest of the weekend’s events. 2007 AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies, who filled in for Capirossi at Donington, is available but Rizla Suzuki announced that he will not race in Assen.
