Aprilia enters AMA Daytona Sportbike

Will run RSV1000R for 2009 with RSV4 due in 2010
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Dec. 19, 2008
Aprilia USA will field a team in the 2009 AMA Daytona Sportbike class.

The factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies team will be managed by KWS Motorsports. Ben Thompson, who rode for Millenium Technologies KWS Suzuki in the 2008 AMA Superstock season, will race for the new team and Aprilia USA says he will be joined by a second rider to be announced at a later date. KWS crew chief Michael Godin has also been retained.

Thompson, who finished 11th in the recent AMA Superstock season, will compete on the Aprilia RSV1000R in what Aprilia USA says will be a test season with the intent of switching to the new RSV4 in 2010.

Aprilia will enter the RSV1000R in its rookie 2009 AMA season with the RSV4 tabbed for 2010.
With a new team structure, new riders and the new RSV4 en route for 2010, a seasons worth of preparation with KWS and real-world racing experience for Aprilia USA at this level has tremendous benefits, said Rick Panettieri, brand manager for Aprilia USA. The current-model RSV has long been respected for its race-bred DNA and its precise and predictable handling under even the most aggressive riding conditions, which has made it a favorite among track day enthusiasts. We chose KWS Motorsports as a racing partner for their expertise in creating top-performing race and production bikes. This will ensure that the RSV is tuned to give the competition a real challenge.

A new factory entry in the 2009 season is good news for AMA Pro Racing following the recent withdrawal of American Honda. Aprilia Millennium Technologies will make its racing debut at the Daytona 200 on March 6, 2009.

After several successful seasons in AMA Superbike and Superstock, launching a factory Daytona SportBike program for Aprilia is a real thrill, says team manager Chip Spalding. Daytona under the lights is the perfect way to start what we know will be a memorable series.
