AMA-SX: 2011 Indianapolis Results

Three in a row for Villopoto
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Mar. 14, 2011
Ryan Villopoto continued with his winning ways, leading every lap at Indianapolis Lucas Oil Stadium for his third consecutive AMA Supercross victory.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider won the previous two races, Feb. 26 in Atlanta, Ga., and March 5 in Daytona, Fla., by taking advantage of crashes by San Manuel Yamaha s James Stewart in both races. It was all Villopoto at Indianapolis however, as he coasted to win by over six seconds.

TwoTwo Motorsports Honda s Chad Reed took the holeshot but he was unable to stop Villopoto from quickly taking over.

The track was really tough tonight, says Villopoto. The ruts played a big factor throughout the 20 lap main. You really had to be smart out there. The whole team worked together really well tonight, and I couldnt do it without them.

Ryan Villopoto has built a comfortable 26-point lead in the championship standings.

While Villopoto ran away with the race, Reed had to defend his position against first Rockstar Makita Suzuki s Ryan Dungey and then his archrival Stewart.

Dungey tried to pressure Reed through the first half of the race but crashed after catching the back of Reeds rear wheel on lap 10.

This was a tough one tonight, says Dungey. I got up to the back of Chad Reed and clipped his back tire while trying to knife-under and went down. He checked up, and the next thing I knew I was losing my front end.

With Dungey down it was Stewarts turn to challenge Reed for second. This time, Reed was unable to hold onto second as Stewart moved past him on lap 11. Stewart would hold on to return to the podium after missing out the past two rounds. Despite the second place finish, Stewart says he still feels disappointed with the result.

I had a rough weekend last week and wasnt able to ride the way I wanted to, says Stewart. I let my team down today. Its not over. Im so motivated right now and I have a bunch of guys behind me.

The 2011 AMA Supercross series moves on to James Stewart's home state of Florida for the Jacksonville round.

Reed held off Dungey to finish third to give him podium finishes in four straight races and six of the past seven.

The 2011 AMA Supercross Championship continues March 19 in Jacksonville, Fla. After Indianapolis, Villopoto holds a 26-point edge over Stewart. Reed sits in third place, 29 points behind Villopoto while Dungey is 38 points back in fourth place.
