Chad Reed clinched the 2009 AMA Motocross Championship with an overall win Aug. 22 at Budds Creek Motocross Park in Mechanicsville, Md.

The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider and two-time AMA Supercross Champion cemented his first AMA-MX title with second- and first-place finishes at Budds Creek. Reed now has an insurmountable 434-330 lead over Honda Red Bull Racings Andrew Short in the 450cc class with two rounds remaining. The overall win gave Reed five on the season.

I feel like my career is complete, though I also feel like I have a lot of fight left in me but this is definitely a step in the right direction, says Reed.

The first moto went to Honda Red Bulls David Millsaps who aided his teammate by finishing 1.333 seconds ahead of Reed. Short, however, finished over a minute back in seventh place, giving Reed a 409-319 lead heading into the second moto.

Chad Reed has clinched the 2009 AMA Motocross Championship.

Reed needed to outscore Short by 10 points in the second moto to clinch the title. Taking an early lead, Reed raced to victory in the second race for 25 points while Short earned only 11 points with a tenth-place finish.

In the first moto, I was pretty disappointed that I didn't put myself in a position to win, says Reed. Winning the Championship is what this hard work is all about and I want to thank everybody at the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team because everybody did a great job. We were a last-minute entry and we gave it our all. We are all very, very happy to get this championship.

In the 250cc class, Monster Energy Kawasaki s Jake Weimer took the overall win with a second-place finish in the first moto and a win in a rain-shortened second moto.

Weimers teammate, Christophe Pourcel also had a successful weekend, winning the first moto and finishing third in the second race. Pourcels results give him 432 points to sit on top of the standings. Rockstar Makita Suzukis Ryan Dungey finished third in the first race and fourth in the second to sit 13 points behind Pourcel in the standings.

The 2009 AMA Motocross season continues Aug. 29 at Motocross 338 in Southwick, Mass.
