24 Hours of Electricross sets record
The 24 Hours of Electricross, hosted by Zero Motorcycles, drew over 50 competitors on ten teams in the showcase for electric off-road vehicles. Teams raced for 24 hours, beginning at 10 a.m. PST on April 4 to 10 a.m. April 5, stopping only to swap riders, change batteries and perform other repairs.
The winning team, HotChalks MDV won by completing over 1,015 laps, travelling more than 507.5 miles on a 2009 Zero X motorcycle at the 408MX Motocross track in San Jose, Calif. In total, the ten teams completed 8,932 laps.
Representatives from Guinness World Records were on hand to witness the worlds longest all-electric motorcycle race.
This event proved that electric technology can endure the same level of competition as their gas-powered counterparts, however, the power resources to compete are drastically different. The total cost to power all 10 motorcycles for 24 hours was approximately $100, says Neal Saiki, inventor and founder of Zero Motorcycles. From New Mexico to Canada to the UK, teams traveled from across the globe to participate in this record-setting race and to be a part of history.
