![]() Motorcycling into the wild
Having just arrived into Magadan, Russia, a group of adventurous motorcyclists celebrated being the first tour party to ever ride the infamous Road of Bones, constructed by Stalin’s Gulag prisoners during the 30s and 40s. On an epic 102 day motorcycle journey that began in London the bikers from Australia, Canada, Mexico and the US rode into Magadan, bitterly cold, exhausted yet elated at their accomplishment. “On an expedition of this nature challenges are always faced and this expedition was no exception” says the expedition leader and owner of Compass Expeditions, Mick McDonald, “there was more than one moment that we thought we are done for” Mick continues. “Broken bikes, broken support vehicle trailer, frozen icy passes that had every biker sliding down mountainsides and shocking roads to no roads at all, all added to the experience”, says Mick. The expedition traverses an exceptionally wild part of the earth and very few people travel this route. “A big surprise to all the riders was the incredible beauty and silent loneliness that was encountered, especially on the Road of Bones” continues Mick, “it certainly wasn’t expected knowing of the regions recent history” he says. ![]() Funny, when I was watching "Long Way Round," I was wondering how long it would take a touring company to put this trip together. There will probaby be KFCs and BP gas stations along the way in a few years.
