"There aint many that goes by but theyre fast...."

Great story if you sort of get the picture of the old desert road where folks dont see much traffic go by.

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

I drive on that road regularly. To the south that straight stretch drops about 100 feet and turns sharply to the right. To the north there is a nice slow sweeper that gains 500 hundred feet in a couple of miles, giving him a nice run off. He's gotta run both ways for an official record. I hope he's put as much work into the brakes as he has the engine.

The altitiude is about 6000 feet. I wonder how fast it would go at Bonneville which is about 4,000 feet.

I'm not sure how much truth there is to this article. After all it says he was a dance club owner in Utah County. I think that dancing is illegal there.

Shall we send Kevin Bacon to this county?

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

Well, actually that road is in the mountains not the desert.

"Not much traffic" is a relative thing. Sure it's nothing like shytholes like LA, but there's always a regular flow of traffic on that road. Indianola only has about 50 people, but there are three or four rec property developements right near there. And Hwy 89 is the main route in that area. I'd say a vehicle passes along every few minutes. Sunday can be the worst day. On Sundays when the weather is nice and all the sightseers, campers and fair weather motorcyclists are out it's a regular freeway.

San Pete County? Things have changed since Footloose. Now the most popular activity is running meth labs.

Hillclimb on a 'Busa??

"nice slow sweeper that gains 500 hundred feet in a couple of miles"

If he had a CBR929rr he could have done this years ago.

Not that it really matters.

"members of the Utah State Patrol, Fairview Ambulance Service and SanPete County Sheriffs Dept. were standing by" Along with a highway crew equipped with shovels a water truck and a firehose to clean him up when Jethro pulls out the driveway in the ol' '75 F150 for a beer run into town...

"Poor Jethro din't know what hit 'im....musta' been a spaceman goin' so fast".....

More likely it'd be a Dodge Power Wagon. I don't think there are any Ford dealers in San Pete County. I seen a Chevy dealer once, though.

We know it wasn't a Concours!

seruzawa 11-20-2006 04:46 AM

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

It'll be the new Concours. 200+ easy! Plus it'll be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

sarnali2 11-20-2006 04:48 AM

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

Why here in the big city there's one on every corner, and some of the buildings even have TWO stories..

sarnali2 11-20-2006 04:49 AM

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

I'll bet you could get a new ZX14 based Concours up to 200 with a little work.

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

Yeah, a little work and a BIG turbo!

Unfortunately I think Dante's overlook and Artist's circle (or whatever it's called) are still both closed. The roads were washed away in the rains this past Spring.

I'd love to do another Death Valley ride but it's not the same if you can't take those two roads.

My favorite town in Sanpete is Mountainview.. pop 8. One guy's farm.

Could be worse. There are 3 counties in Nevada with no population at all. If you've been through there you'd know why.

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

What are you talking about MOfo?! We all know my Concours will do 250mph in 4th gear.

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

That's whats funny about Washington and Oregon, the evergreens, rivers and lakes etc are all in a narrow strip between the Cascades and the Pacific. The 75% of the state that's east of the mountains is sage brush, tumbleweeds and rattlesnakes.

Pretty good riding though, all rolling hills and loopy curves with the Columbia cutting through the middle....smell of sagebrush in the air... Just like a damn cowboy movie!

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

I was picturing this lonely, little used road where people come out of their driveways and don't quite know whether turn out or not: "seldom anyone coming but when they is half the time you don't see em anyway......"

Indianola Wildlife Management Area, Utah

Description: 2200-acre juniper woodland and sage grassland provides winter habitat for a large herd of elk, and many mule deer. Viewing is best done from side of the highway, but be cautious pulling in and out of traffic.

Just a little something to put into ones head before going 260 in Indianola.

A little elk never hurt anyone.

Right. But first you have to find a little elk.

I once saw a dead bloated cow moose in the Boundary Waters in norther MN. It was probably the single most disgusting thing I've ever seen. It was floating in a lake and looked like a balloon ready to burst.

Well, this is pleasant. It's been hours and no lunatics have shown up to post internet links "proving" that my personal observations of this stretch of road are wrong.

I remember the Imperial Weasels of the GPTB saying the guy would get off because of inaccurate speed measurements. kpaul said speeding is speeding i.e. close enough for government work. kpaul was right again.

It's more disgusting when it's human.

Back in my TV news days the locals would get drunk and then try to swim across irrigation canals. Apparently it's a lot harder than you would think.

Needless to say, we could never use the video.

Bonneville vs pavement

If the road gets a thin layer of ice or slush, it would be a lot more like Bonneville. You have a lot of wheelspin problems at Bonneville, and the fast bikes have to add weight to get traction. John Noonan had to add some steel plates (maybe a couple of hundred pounds) to the swingarm of his Hayabusa, for example. Asphalt and Bonneville are two really different situations. By the way, bikes already run on paving at Maxton and the Texas mile, but they have short (about a mile) runups.

You can gain a few mph just by shaving your body and doing the run wearing only your swimsuit.

It worked for Rollie Free.

"Been riding several years" I don't pretend to know much about landspeed records, but I don't think it takes the same kind of skills used in roadracing. I think maybe this guy is in over his head. I hope I'm wrong.

I was thinking that at higher altitude you have less wind resistance while the turbo still gives the same HP you would get at a lower altitide.

Re: Attempt to Top 259 mph is Scheduled for March.

I hope he at least added a good steering damper.

This stretch of road was part of a big resurfacing project last year and is exceptionally smooth and damage free. I bet that's another reason he chose it. We'll see how it survives the winter.
