Default K Series

I am thinking of getting a BMW for the enjoyment and added economy of primarily commuting to work - about 20 miles one way on country roads. What do you think of a late 80's K-Series. I want a reliable, easy to ride, smooth bike that I can enjoy for years to come without laying down $10k. Any K-series owners out there willing to tell me about there experience. I found one for $4000 with about 30,000 miles that appears to be well taken care of.

I put 60K on an '85 K100RS, one of the best bikes I've owned, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one at the right price.

K100s are great bikes, though the earlier RT (85-88 ) years might have some heat problems in the summer. Taking off the lowers helps a lot. I've heard of those K100s being pulled apart and miking out near stock at 100K miles. 1980s examples with 50-70K miles should run around $3K. $4K for one with 30K miles is probably a good deal provided the bike is in otherwise excellent shape.
