"The Allman Brothers" Bassist Remembered

Motorcycle accident tragically claimed his life

One of the founding members and bassist from “The Allman Brothers”, Berry Oakley died from his injuries in a motorcycle accident 36 years ago today on November 11, 1972. The accident happened in Macon, Georgia with a bus, ironically just a few blocks from where guitarist Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident the year before colliding with a truck, Oakley and Allman were both 24 years old at the time of their untimely and premature deaths.
After the accident with the bus, Oakley insisted that he was okay and refused medical treatment. Three hours later he was taken to the hospital and died of a brain hemorrhage due to a skull fracture. In 1998, a bridge on State Highway 19, in Macon, Georgia was designated as the “Raymond Berry Oakley III Bridge” in his memory.
