  • Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM

I owned a '55 BSA Gold Star and a '53 Indian Chief in 1959. Got married, sold both, and went to college. Had always wanted to get back in riding. Finally, in October, 2005, found a DR-Z 400 SM with 189 miles. (Previous owner thought it was a dual-purpose but found out otherwise and traded for a Kawasaki ...

Reminds me somewhat of the Gold Star, but is much better. An ideal runabout. I use mostly in town with a little country road exploring in Cenral Texas. Rarely go over 25-30 miles on a trip. Open road up to 70 or so is ok. Had some wind problems at 60-70. Added a windshield. Made it easier to ride without crouching, but increased need for ear plugs. Also replaced seat with Corbin which lowered about 2 inches. Added Dirtz Bags (large size).

I wish they hadn't used wire wheels. This is a street bike and tubes suck. Also, I'd like a tach and a center stand. You can get by without either but I like to see what the engine is doing and be able to service the chain easier.

Would recommend to anybody who wants a bike that is zippy, lightweight, incredibly good handling, with fantastic brakes.

Wow - what a great bike! My total riding history is over 10 years but it was a good 8 years between the DRZ and my last Suzuki (500 Gamma - I lived in Germany for 6 years and had the pleasure of owning this 2-stroke beast!)

So when I got back into riding, thought this would be a perfect transition ...
