Zero Motorcycles announced it will enter a three-rider team in the 2011 AMA MiniMoto SX, May 6 in Las Vegas at the South Point Hotel and Casino.

Electric motorcycles made their debut in the 2010 MiniMoto SX event competing against gas-powered pitbikes. Drew Gosselaar took the win for Swiss electric motorcycle manufacturer Quantya while Zero riders swept the rest of the top five spots.

For the 2011 event, Zero will compete in the MM16A Stock/Mod class on modified 2011 Zero MX motorcycles. Gasoline and electric bikes will race together but they will be scored separately in the main event. The class is open to Zero and Quantya motorcycles as well as the Kawasaki KLX140, Suzuki DRZ125, Honda XR10, Honda CRF100F and air-cooled Honda CRF150F.

Zero will be represented by engineer technician and test rider Trevor Doniak, WORCS and Endurocross racer Jamie Lanza, and Chris Green, motocross racer and associate editor for Dirt Rider magazine.

Zero Motorcycles is entering three modified Zero MX bikes in a race at the 2011 AMA MiniMoto SX.

“Electric motorcycle racing is evolving rapidly and is the ideal venue for refining Zero Motorcycles’ advanced motorcycle technology. This type of race also helps showcase what electric motorcycles are capable of by facing off against gasoline competitors,” says Scot Harden, vice president of global marketing for Zero Motorcycles and someone who knows a little bit about off-road racing. “Our 2011 Zero MX is incredibly tough and lightweight plus it features a newly developed suspension system to tackle the jumps and whoops of a larger and more technical Mini Moto SX track. This is going to be a great event and we’re proud to be involved again this year.”

The 2011 AMA MiniMoto SX will take place on a new track at a new venue. For 2011, the event is moving to the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa from its traditional location at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The new venue has a larger surface, allowing for a longer track. The MiniMotoSX serves as an unofficial prelude for the AMA Supercross finale, which will run the day after at Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium.
