World MX to honor Chandler and McFarlane
Chandler passed away May 4 while McFarlane succumbed to head injuries in a crash during a practice lap before a race in Australia May 2.
A minute of silence will be observed at 12:10 pm Western European Time before the first MX2 heat. The motocross bikes at the event will also bear McFarlanes shark logo on their number plates.
McFarlane, 32, has competed in the Motocross World Championship, the Australian Motocross Championship and the AMA Motocross Championship. McFarlanes best season came in 2005 when he finished second in the MX2 World Championship to Antonio Cairoli. McFarlane also represented Australia in the Motocross of Nations, and returned to his native land to compete in the national championship. He was expected to retire at the end of the 2010 season. McFarlane is survived by his wife Natalie and their daughter, Tayla.
Chandler, 50, was a top motocross rider in the 80s, winning the U.S. Grand Prix and representing the U.S. in the Motocross des Nations and the Trophee des Nations in 1982. Chandler was paralyzed after a crash in Paris and later devoted his life to speaking about motorcycle safety, promoting mountain bike races and working with the drug awareness program D.A.R.E.
