WERA chief criticizes AMA

Evelyne Clarke critical of the arrogance of the AMA
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Aug. 28, 2008
WERA Motorcycle Roadracing president Evelyne Clarke has criticized the AMA for its decision to drop WERA in favor of the Championship Cup Series (CCS) for the AMA Sports Road Race Grand Championships (RRGC).

The arrogance of the AMA never ceases to amaze me, says Clarke in a letter addressed to AMA President Rob Dingman and published on WERAs website.

WERA worked with the AMA to run the RRGC from 2000 to 2007 with Evelyne Clarke handling the gridding, timing and scoring while her husband Sean Clarke filled the role of race director. Earlier this month, however, the AMA announced that it had decided to hand the operational duties for the RRGC to CCS, WERAs main competitor.

In her letter, Clarke takes exception to comments made by Bryan Cohn, AMAs senior director of racing in the announcement. In the AMAs press release, Cohn describes CCS as a strong partner and says that the opportunity to work with CCS allows us to take the Road Race Grand Championships to the next level. AMAs ties to CCS should not be much of a surprise; CCS was founded in 1984 by Roger Edmondson who now heads AMA Pro Racing.

WERA Motorcycle Roadracing has been around for 30+ years and our history is rich with the names of AMA Champions, says Clarke. WERA Motorcycle Roadracing stepped up and worked with AMA to make this event better (which we did) and in 2007 WERA Motorcycle Roadracing had a co-sanction agreement with AMA Pro for our National Series which benefited the AMA with new members, and this is the way we get repaid for trying to work with AMA.

Clarke, who recently reached an agreement to assume full ownership of WERA, says WERA will continue to develop future stars of American road racing.
