Stewart Wins 2010 US Open of Supercross

The San Manuel Yamaha rider showed no signs of rust after skipping the 2009 AMA Motocross season. Stewart last raced at the AMA Supercross finale May 2 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

Stewart returned to action, and to Las Vegas, this time at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, with a win in the first main event Oct. 9 and another Oct. 10. The two wins were also the first victories for the redesigned 2010 Yamaha YZ450F and its reversed engine layout.

Stewart won the first main event handily, taking the holeshot and leading all 20 laps. Honda Red Bull Racings Davi Millsaps finished second after passing third-place finisher Dan Reardon of GEICO Powersports Honda halfway through the race.

The second main event proved to be more of a challenge for Stewart who found himself stuck in the middle of the pack early on.

Reardon took the holeshot but lost the lead to Monster Energy Kawasaki s Ryan Villopoto later in the first lap. Villopoto looked to be making up for his disappointing result the night before when a mechanical failure ended his race after eight laps.

By mid-race however, Stewart had made his way back to the leaders, passing Reardon for second on lap four. Villopoto and Stewart exchanged the lead on lap 10 before Stewart found the advantage and pulled ahead for the win.

The U.S. Open seems to offer up more bar banging than any other race, and its always a good time, says Stewart. That was the first time that Ryan (Villopoto) and I have raced since the Vegas Supercross in May, so its cool to get back out here to rub some elbows. The new bike is awesome, too! I felt like I was underneath everybody in all the corners and it all just came together for me. Ryan was riding really well, but I just stayed patient and snuck by for the win.

Villopoto finished over nine seconds back for second place. Millsaps passed Reardon on the final lap to claim third.
