Buell, Ducati, Honda and Yamaha issue recalls
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Sep. 30, 2009
Ducati, Honda, Buell and Yamaha issued recall notices in September with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ducati issued a recall notice for the 2010 Streetfighter. While investigating the cause of engine stalls, Ducati discovered the Streetfighters engine control unit may not have been properly tightened during production.

Dealers will retighten the ground screw on the engine control unit of affected motorcycles at no charge. The recall notice affects 247 motorcycles.

Ducati also issued a recall notice on the 2008 Desmosedici RR due to a lack of sufficient distance between the tail guard and the exhaust system. This may cause the tail guard to overheat, creating a potential fire hazard.

Dealers will modify the tail guard profile to create a sufficient distance from the exhaust at no charge. The recall notice affects 386 motorcycles.

The 2010 Ducati Streetfighter is the subject of a recall notice issued in September.

Buell issued a recall notice for 2009 Lightning Long XB12Ss motorcycles. The front brake line on Lightning Long bikes built between June 30, 2008 and June 4, 2009 may be poorly routed and may come in contact with the front tire. Repeated contact may wear a hole in the brake line causing a brake fluid leak and loss of braking power.

Buell dealers will inspect the front brake line and if the line is undamaged, install a guide to prevent contact with the tire. If the line shows signs of damage, dealers will replace and re-route the line at no charge. The recall notice affects 405 motorcycles.

Honda issued a recall notice for 2002 VTX1800 cruisers produced between Aug. 14, 2001 and Oct. 4, 2001 due to a flaw in the swingarm welding. According to documents filed with the NHTSA, the final drive mounting flange on the swingarm may not be sufficiently welded. This may cause the swingarm to break. Honda first received reports of swingarm weld cracking in 2004 but determined no safety-related defect existed. In Feb. 2009, Honda re-opened its investigation into the VTX1800s swingarm welding after receiving additional reports, and in September, decided a recall notice was necessary.

Honda dealers will inspect the swingarm flange weld and, if necessary, replace the swingarm at no charge. The recall notice affects 688 motorcycles.

Five years after first receiving reports of swingarm defects, Honda issued a recall notice on the 2002 VTX1800.

Yamaha issued a recall notice on the 2005 FJR1300 sport tourer, FZS600 Fazer and YZF-R1 sportbike. The throttle position sensor on the three bikes may fail, potentially causing the engine to stall.

Dealers will replace the throttle position sensors on affected motorcycles at no charge. Yamaha estimates 140 R1s, 20 Fazers and 20 FJR1300 motorcycles may be affected by this issue.
