Millions around the world are expected to take part in the event, now in its 19th year. Ride to Work Day encourages riders who dont normally do so to park their cars and use their motorcycles and scooters to commute to work. The demonstration is expected to triple the number of riders on the roads.
Ride to Work Day is one of our best advertisements for the motorcycling lifestyle, says Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government relations. With more riders on the road during rush hour, these benefits become even clearer. Motorcycles and scooters are a socially responsible form of transportation that reduce fuel consumption and wear and tear on roads, ease congestion, make parking easier and exponentially increase the fun of your commute.
With more motorcycles and scooters expected on the roads than usual, sharing the road safety is a concern for riders and drivers.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is also reminding both riders and drivers to share the road safely.
Whether on your way to the office or heading home from a day on the job site, workers should be aware of the need to look out for motorcyclists, says Tim Buche, MSF president. Regardless of how many wheels you have, both drivers and riders need to be aware and respectful of their fellow road users, especially during typical commuting hours when roadways are crowded and people may be tired, distracted or hurrying to get somewhere.
The MSF offers some tips to both riders and drivers:
Riders:
- Get proper training and licensing
- Wear appropriate safety gear at all times
- Ride unimpaired by alcohol or drugs
- Ride within your skill limits and obey traffic laws
- Refresh your skills with the MSFs RiderCourses
Drivers:
- Avoid driving distracted
- Use your eyes and mirrors and check blind spots for motorcyclists
- Give motorcycles and scooters extra room
- Use your turn signals
- Secure cargo and avoid throwing things out the window
Ride to Work Day organizers offer some tips on encouraging participation such as organizing a local breakfast, arranging for special parking and offering non-riders a ride. Ride to Work Day stickers can also be created by printing stickers on adhesive paper.
