Recall for 25,176 E-TON Scooters

Kill switches and high beam switches swapped
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Apr. 07, 2011
Scooter manufacturer E-TON is issuing a recall on 25,176 vehicles because of non-standard switch placement.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the engine kill switches and the high/low beam switches on certain E-TON scooters are in the wrong places. More specifically, the switches are reversed, with the engine off switch on the left handlebar where the light switch should be while the high beam light switch is on the right handlebar where the kill switch should be. As a result, the recalled vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213.

Those used to riding other two-wheeled vehicles may inadvertently turn off the engine of an E-TON scooter while trying to turn on the high beam lights, potentially causing a crash. No accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the improperly located switches, however.

The recall campaign affects 25,176 vehicles spanning from model years 1999-2009. The affected units are:

  • 08-2009 E-TON / Matrix 50
  • 08-2009 E-TON / Matrix RX 150
  • 1999-2003 E-TON / PN2
  • 04-2009 E-TON / PN2B/Beamer 50
  • 04-2006 E-TON / PN2C
  • 06-2008 E-TON / PN2F/Beamer RX 150
  • 07 E-TON / PN2G

E-TON dealers will reverse the controls so that the switches are in their standardized locations.
