VFR or ZX-14?

By George Obradovich, Apr. 12, 2007
I'm looking to replace my trusty '01 SV-650 with something a little more refined/high-end.

I love the handling and the engine of the SV but don't like the el-cheapo suspension and especially brakes. I'd also like some wind protection as I commute year round, as long as the streets are relatively dry. I know about the upgrade options, but I'm not sure I want to spend multiple thousands for that. And that's really an excuse for "I kinda just want a new bike." My riding is, unfortunately, mostly commuting these days, but I do get a bunch of turns in even on that ride and the long way home has some decent twisties.

I've narrowed the field down to the VFR (w/ABS) and the ZX-14, not exactly comparable machines in many ways, but both have the qualitites I'm looking for: high end build quality, good sporty (but not racy) handling, reasonable rider position, good componentry, etc. I don't need the power of the the ZX-14, and like the ABS option with the VFR, but the ZX-14 has "better" brakes and suspension. Both are nicely ugly.

I did own a '94 VFR for a while, putting quite a few miles on it (and really enjoying it). What say ye, MOrons?
