Salt Lake City’s leaders know what’s good for you. Better, it seems, than you know yourself.

Fresh from banning smoking in much of the great urban outdoors, City Hall is on the verge of proposing a helmet law that would make Salt Lake City one of the few cities in the country requiring that all bicycle-riding adults don a safety helmet.

Among Salt Lake City bicycle enthusiasts, however, the case against a mandatory helmet law boils down to an old argument from the state’s motorcyclists: It’s about freedom, man.
