Neal Saiki Leaves Zero Motorcycles

NASA engineer founded company in 2006
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Mar. 08, 2011
Zero Motorcycles founder Neal Saiki is leaving the electric motorcycle company he created in 2006.

Saiki, a former NASA engineer, founded Zero Motorcycles (then under the name Electricross) with his wife Lisa in Scotts Valley, Calif., in January 2006. From its humble start in Saikis garage, Zero Motorcycles has grown to a full production company with an employee base of over 60 people and an industry-leading lineup of five electric motorcycles.

Saiki plans to enter the Igor I. Sikorski Huamn Powered Helicopoter Competition, something Saiki had pursued when he was an aeronautical engineering student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Zero Motorcycles will be a corporate sponsor of Saikis entry to the competition.

Founding Zero was exciting, fun and a lot of hard work. At this point, I think it is well established. Im extremely proud of the team weve assembled to carry Zero into the future. I can now move on to pursuing the dream of building a human powered flying machine, says Saiki.

Saikis separation from Zero Motorcycles had been rumored for several weeks, but this announcement was the first official word on the situation. Over the past year, the company has hired several industry veterans such as off-road racing legend Scot Harden and former Buell engineer Abe Askenazi.

Neal had the vision, the talent and the courage to launch an electric motorcycle company before there really was an electric motorcycle industry, or even a market. His vision and hard work have helped make Zero the industry leader, says Aflalo Guimarães, long-time Zero Motorcycles Board Member, and managing director of the companys largest investor, The Invus Group. We are grateful to Neal and will continue to rely on his vision and counsel.
