Tamburini has been designing motorcycles for MV Agusta and its subsidiary Cagiva since 1985. Over the last 13 years, Tamburini and his staff have been producing high-performance premium motorcycles such as the MV Agusta F4 and the Cagiva Mito. Tamburini also designed the Ducati 916 in 1994 while the company was owned by Cagiva. Tamburini will retire on Dec. 31.

Prior to joining Cagiva, Tamburini founded Bimota with Valerio Bianchi and Giuseppe Morri in 1973. Tamburini’s first Bimota bike was the HB1, based off the Honda CB750. In 1983, Tamburini worked in research and development for Roberto Gallina’s Grand Prix race team before moving onto Cagiva.
“Massimo Tamburini is one of the legends of the motorcycle industry and leaves a great legacy at MV Agusta,” says Claudio Castiglioni, MV Agusta chairman and director of motorcycle research and development. “The capabilities he built at MV Agusta’s design center are outstanding and his legacy and vision will now be carried forward by the team he assembled and mentored over many years. While we will miss his presence, we respect his decision to retire and wish him all the best for the future.”
After his retirement, Tamburini plans to spend more time on other outside interests and pursue design interests in other fields.
