Rizla Suzuki racer Alvaro Bautista has broken his left femur in a high-speed crash during a practice session at the MotoGP season opener in Qatar.

Bautista high-sided at turn 15 at the Losail circuit in Doha, Qatar, near the end of the third practice session. Staff of the Clinica Mobile diagnosed a broken left femur. Bautista was taken immediately to the Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha for further testing.

Rizla Suzuki has not announced whether it will withdraw from the Grand Prix of Qatar, as Bautista is teams only rider. American racer John Hopkins races for Rizla Suzuki team manager Paul Dennings British Superbike team and recently rode the Suzuki GSV-R for a video shoot, making him a prime candidate as a replacement rider. Hopkins is reportedly in California and is unlikely to be able to make it to Qatar in time for the season opener but he may be called upon to race while Bautista recovers from the injury.

John Hopkins, seen here in a recent photoshoot with Rizla Suzuki, is the likeliest candidate as a replacement for Alvaro Bautista.
