Melandri to race Speedcar

Former 250cc GP champ enters auto race
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Feb. 10, 2009
Displaced Kawasaki rider Marco Melandri has found a ride, but it will be on four wheels instead of two.

The former 250cc champion is still waiting to learn his fate after Kawasakis decision to withdraw from MotoGP racing. Melandri doesnt know if he will join the rest of the MotoGP grid at the season opener at the Losail International Circuit in Doha, Qatar, but he will make his 2009 racing debut on that track.

Melandri has signed on to join former Formula One driver Heinz Harald Frentzen on Team Lavaggi in the Qatar round of the Speedcar Series, Feb. 12-14. Frentzen is currently tied for the Speedcar series lead with 2008 champion Johnny Herbert.

Marco Melandri will race on Qatar's Losail International Circuit, but on four wheels, not two.
Now in its second season, the one-make NASCAR-style racing series takes place over six rounds. Each round includes two races featuring custom V8 620 hp stock cars.

The Qatar round will feature a grid of 14 racers including seven former F1 drivers such as Frentzen, Herbert, Jean Alessi and 1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve.
