June 15 is Ride to Work Day
The event encourages motorcycle owners to leave their cars in the garage and ride their bikes to work to demonstrate the benefits of two-wheeled commuting. Organizers say the event will show that motorcycles and scooters are efficient, economical forms of transportation.
Motorcycles and scooters consume less resources per mile than automobiles, and they take up less space in parking areas and on roads, says Ride to Work Day organizer Andy Goldfine. Riders seek employer support for this efficient form of transportation, and more government and public awareness about ridings many benefits.
According to the 2003 U.S. census, 129 million Americans commute each day but only 150,000 regularly ride motorcycles to work. Statistics compiled by the Motorcycle Industry Council show 14.2% of Americas 6.5 million registered motorcycles are used for seasonal or year-round transportation.
Ride to Work Day is observed in the United States, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Russia.
