The Jamie James Yamaha Champions Riding school produced its first class of riders at Barber Motorsports Park.

Students learned under the tutelage of 1989 AMA Superbike champion Jamie James and former World Superbike champion ‘Mr. Daytona’ Scott Russell, along with guest instructor and five-time Yamaha AMA 250cc National Champion Rich Oliver.

“This was a great opportunity to work with Jamie and Scott again and share our combined National Championship winning experience with the students,” says Oliver who runs his own riding school, the Rich Oliver Mystery School.

Students spent time in the classroom and on the track over the course of two days. Students rode on Yamaha R6 and R1 bikes and reviewed video of their own track performances.

“My favorite part of the school was the track walk with Rich and Scott giving passing laps and lines,” says student Paul Sutton. “I enjoyed Jamie’s interaction with all the students.”

72-year-old Paul Layman was one of the students, proving that one can never be too old to race.

“I want to thank Yamaha for this new effort to work with Jamie James and put this school together,” says Layman. “It was a great experience working with these top notch instructors and the Barber track.”

Graduates received a certificate, a t-shirt and an autographed group photo of the instructors.

The next round of classes is scheduled for May 26-27.
