INTERMOT 2010: Triumph Thunderbird Storm

T-Bird gets blacked-out 1700cc sibling
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Oct. 06, 2010
Triumph introduced a new bored out version of its Thunderbird cruiser at the INTERMOT show in Cologne.

The 2011 Triumph Thunderbird Storm is powered by a 1699cc liquid-cooled Parallel Twin engine with a 270 degree firing interval, up from the standard Thunderbirds 1597cc powerplant. Triumph did release a limited edition 1700cc Thunderbird for 2010, but that was merely the regular Thunderbird with the optional big bore upgrade kit included. Triumph claims 98hp at 5200rpm for the Thunderbird Storm, with torque rated at 115 ft-lb. at 2950rpm.

A big-bore version of the Thunderbird was available in limited numbers as a 2010 model but the 1700cc Thunderbird Storm will be a full production model.

The Storm offers more than just the big bore upgrade however. Though it uses the same chassis as the standard Thunderbird, the Storm received a number of styling changes. The standard Thunderbirds single headlight has been replaced with twin bug-eye headlights (an iconic look which, judging from comments on Triumphs Facebook page, fans prefer to the new headlights on the 2011 Speed Triple). Triumph also gave the Thunderbird Storm new handlebars and blacked out components.

Triumph says the Thunderbird Storm's twin headlights is a nod to the Speed Triple and Rocket III. That makes the choice to replace them on the new Speed Triple even odder.
