Horex VR6 Patent Includes W8 Configuration

1500cc W8 engine described in patent documents

The new Horex surprised the motorcycle world with plans to produce a supercharged VR6 Roadster, but patent documents uncovered by U.K. website Visordown reveal the company also considered a W configuration.

The VR6 Roadster uses two a 1218cc triple overhead camshaft engine with two offset rows of three cylinders at a 15 degree angle. The engine configuration allows the engine to be compact enough for a motorcycle (Horex says it is slightly wider than a conventional inline-four but also slightly shorter).

Patent documents for the Horex VR6 engine including having two VR setups sharing a crankshaft in a 72 degree W configuration.

A U.S. patent registered to Clemens Neese, founder of the revived Horex, for the VR configuration also allows for two VR setups to share the same crankshaft in a W arrangement up to 12 cylinders. Like the VR configuration, W engines are used by automaker Volkswagen with examples including the 2001 VW Passat and the 2011 Audi A8.

An illustration shows how the W8 engine would be mounted longitudinally with the cylinders pointing outward.

Illustrations show a W8 engine mounted longitudinally on a motorcycle with the cylinders pointing outward like on a Moto Guzzi. The diagram is an example of a 1500cc W8 with a 60.6mm bore and 65mm stroke. The engine is comprised of two 15-degree V-inline banks joined in at a 72 degree angle.

A Horex W8 isnt likely to emerge any time soon however, as the VR6 Roadster wont enter production until later this year.

The VR6 Roadster is scheduled to enter production later this year.
