American Harley-Davidson dealers have begun taking orders on the previously European-only XR1200.

U.S. dealerships received notifications from Harley-Davidson that an initial run of 750 XR1200 bikes will be available for the American market.

Designed by Harley-Davidsons European development branch, the XR1200 was introduced at the 2006 Intermot show in Cologne, Germany and released in April 2008. Up until now, however, the XR1200 was a European-exclusive model.

The XR1200 is powered by a modified air-cooled 1,203cc Evolution V45 engine.
The XR750-inspired motorcycle was designed for navigating European roads, but American consumers started to wonder if the XR1200 would ever be available on this side of the Atlantic.

Anticipation of the American arrival of the XR1200 increased in June after news hit that Harley-Davidson had purchased the U.S. trademark rights to the XR1200 brand.

Dealers will take pre-orders on the XR1200 through Dec. 15 at a retail price of $11,179.
