Hayden Named Grand Marshal of Indy Mile

Kentucky Kid revisits his roots
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Aug. 24, 2010
Nicky Hayden will be the Grand Marshall of the Indy Mile AMA Flat Track Grand National, Aug. 28 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The 2006 MotoGP Champion is going back to his roots as Grand Marshal for the Indy Mile. Hayden had a successful dirt track career before turning his focus to road racing. In 1999, Hayden won the Ricky Graham Rookie of the Year award from the AMA Pro Grand National Championship at the Indy Mile.

Were honored to have a U.S. and World Champion such as Nicky Hayden serve as Grand Marshal, says Mike Moore, president of The Promotion Company-Family Events, producers of the Lucas Oil Indy Mile. Its a fitting tribute Nickys many accomplishments, especially here at the legendary Lucas Oil Indy Mile where he was first honored as a rookie.

Ironically, a victory in a Mile is the only thing missing from Haydens attempt at joining the Grand Slam club. Hayden has wins in AMA Superbike as well as Short Track, TT and Half Mile Grand Nationals but has never won the Mile. Hayden has come close but still frequently states his regret at not completing the Grand Slam. Only four riders have ever won in all five disciplines, Doug Chandler, Dick Mann, Kenny Roberts and Bubba Shobert.
