By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Feb. 03, 2011
The Congressional Motorcycle Safety Caucus is returning with the recovering U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords coming back as co-chair.

The 11-member CMSC was officially registered for the 112th Congress, the third straight session for the bipartisan group. The group is made up of members of Congress working to promote the interests of motorcyclists.

Returning as co-chairs of the CMSC are U.S. Reps. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) and Giffords (D-Ariz.). Giffords is still recovering from being shot Jan. 8 by in Tucson, Ariz., in an attack that claimed the lives of six people including a federal judge John Roll and nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green.

Giffords husband, astronaut Mark Kelly spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., saying that Giffords health continues to improve.

Every day, [Giffords] gets a little bit better, and the neurosurgeons and neurologists tell me its a great sign, says Kelly. The slope of that curve is very important.

Its great to have Reps. Burgess and Giffords back as leaders of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, says Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government relations. The Congressional Motorcycle Caucus is made up of dedicated members of Congress who ensure that motorcyclists arent forgotten on Capitol Hill. Reps. Burgess and Giffords have proven that they are true friends of motorcycling.

Kathy Van Kleeck, the Motorcycle Industry Councils senior vice president of government relations echoed Morelands sentiments.

We are honored that Congressman Burgess will once again serve as Co-chair of the Caucus, and we are especially heartened that Representative Giffords will remain as a co-chair as well, says Van Kleeck. Giffords is a rider herself and has always been enthusiastic about motorcycle safety. We look forward to her continued recovery and return to the House.
