FB Corse officially launches MotoGP team

Team and three-cylinder FB01 still needs final approval
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Feb. 12, 2010
Italian racing team FB Corse introduced rider Garry McCoy and its new FB01 MotoGP race bike, offering race fans something tangible after months of rumors and intrigue.

After a protracted John Hopkins soap opera, almost mythical three-cylinder MotoGP bike, and postponed team launch, it would be easy to question whether FB Corse would fulfill its intent to race in MotoGP.

That goal came one step closer to reality with FB Corses official team launch, Feb. 11 in Milan, Italy. FB Corse offially presented McCoy and the FB01 at the offices of chief sponsor Virgin Radio Italy.

The FB01 is powered by a three-cylinder engine developed by Oral Engineering for a potential BMW MotoGP project. That project was shelved when BMW decided to enter the World Superbike Championship with its new S1000RR, but has now been revived with FB Corse.

FB Corse's Garry McCoy and the FB01 were officially presented in Milan.

FB Corse still has a couple of hurdles to overcome before it can compete. The team was not included in the preliminary entry list released by the FIM and the FB01 has yet to be tested on the track. According to FB Corse, the team needs clarification from MotoGP promoter Dorna and the International Road Racing Teams Association about how the series strict testing limitations, and then it needs to meet qualification standards. FB Corse says getting approval to race in MotoGP is only a formality, but nothing will be definite until the FB01 hits the track.

FB Corse also introduced its Moto2 entry which the team intends to enter in five or six rounds of the 2010 season as a wildcard. Simone Grotzkyj Giorgi has been signed to ride the teams Bimota HB4 Moto2 race bike.
