EICMA 2010: Ducati Diavel

The wraps come off Ducatis new cruiser
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Nov. 01, 2010
Ducati has pulled the wraps off the new Diavel cruiser ahead of the opening of the 2010 EICMA show in Milan, Italy.

The Diavel marks Ducati s entry to the power cruiser segment, though Claudio Domenicali, general manager of Ducati Motor Holding, does not describe it as being just a cruiser. Perhaps borrowing from the Multistrada 1200Fs four-bikes-in-one rhetoric, Domenicali describes the Diavel as a combination of a naked streetbike, a cruiser and a sportbike.

We are here at EICMA this week with a series of important innovations that are totally in line with our strategic industrial plan and the Diavel is, without doubt, the most exciting innovation in our 2011 line-up because it represents a new concept of motorcycle, says Domenicali. It is a naked because it is essential, light and agile; a cruiser because it is imposing and also comfortable with a passenger; and a sports bike because it has a powerful heart, muscles, and levels of performance that take your breath away.

According to Ducati's figures, the Diavel's engine was tuned to produce less power but more torque than the engine on the 1198 sportbike.

At the heart of the Ducati Diavel is the 1198cc Testastretta 11 degree engine, with Ducati claiming a peak of 162hp at 9500rpm, and 94 ft-lb. of torque at 8000rpm. The Diavel is also equipped with ABS, Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Riding Modes and a slipper clutch.

Suspension consists of a fully adjustable 50mm Marzocchi front fork and a horizontally mounted fully adjustable Sachs rear shock. The front wheel is equipped with radially-mounted 320mm Brembo monobloc calipers while the rear uses a two-piston floating caliper.

The wide rear uses a specially ordered dual compound Pirelli tire.

In true cruiser fashion, the Diavel has a low seat height, measuring 30.3 inches off the ground. The fuel tank holds 5.3 gallons. The 240 section rear tire is easily the largest found on a stock Ducati, but Ducati claims the Diavel will still be able to reach physics defying lean angles. Kevin, Pete and Jeff will be eager to put that to the test

The base Diavel has a claimed dry weight of 463 pounds, but Ducati is also offering a special carbon version which has a claimed weight of 456 pounds thanks to some carbon fiber components and forged Marchesini wheels.

Note the license plate mount bolted to the rear hub.
