EICMA 2009: Piaggio USB concept
Presented at the 2009 EICMA show in Milan, Italy, the Piaggio USB (Urban Sport Bike) hybrid prototype draws inspiration from scooters, motorcycles and automobiles. According to Piaggio, the USB offers the convenience of a scooter and the comfort of a compact car.
The first thing youll notice about the Piaggio USB is the feet-forward riding position, with the clam shell seat and metal-ribbed foot-rests angled to provide a laid-back riding position.
The Piaggio USB is powered by a two-stroke gasoline direct injection engine coupled with a rear wheel-mounted electric motor. The USB can run purely on electric power with a range of 31 miles at a cruising speed of 37 mph. The lithium-polymer battery pack can be charged through a standard outlet. In hybrid mode, Piaggio says the motor helps provide 147 lb-ft of torque. Combined with a claimed weight of 302 lb., Piaggio says the USB offers a sporty ride in an eco-friendly package.
