Capcom acquires rights for MotoGP games

Exclusive deal runs through 2012
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Apr. 01, 2008
Software developer Capcom has secured exclusive rights to publish videogames using the MotoGP license.

In an agreement that runs through to 2012, the Osaka, Japan based company will be able to produce MotoGP-branded games for the latest generation of videogame platforms. A game based on the 2008 MotoGP season is already in the works for Microsofts Xbox 360, Sonys Playstation3 and Playstation2 and Nintendos Wii consoles, as well as for the PC platform. There are also plans for versions for mobile devices.

Capcom previously held the rights to produce MotoGP games for Sonys consoles while California-based THQ produced its own series for the Xbox 360 and PCs. Both companies produced separate games last year that shared the name, MotoGP 07. THQ had produced five MotoGP-licensed games before Capcom secured exclusive rights from Dorna Sports, which controls commercial and television rights to MotoGP.

We are very excited to have signed this long term agreement with Dorna Sports, which for the first time grants one publisher worldwide multi-platform rights to the adrenaline fuelled world of MotoGP, says Mark Beaumont, head of Capcom's consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe. We feel this move to a single publisher will greatly benefit our ability to develop titles that deliver more authenticity and excitement to the consumer.

Capcoms MotoGP 07 game featured the official teams, riders and bikes from the 2007 racing season. The new agreement also includes the rights to create peripheral gaming devices.
