Budapest is Hungary for a MotoGP race
The rights holder for MotoGP, Dorna Sports has submitted a proposal to the International Motorcycling Federation to include a Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009.
Dona Sports chief executive officer Carmelo Ezpeleta and reigning 125cc world champion Gábor Talmácsi were among the luminaries present in Talmácsis home town of Budapest, Hungary on July 23 for the announcement of the construction of the Balatonring circuit which would host the proposed MotoGP event.
Hungary hosted motorcycle Grand Prix racing in 1990 and 1992 on the Hungaroring circuit in Mogyoród, a village on the outskirts of Budapest. Five-time 500cc world champion Mick Doohan earned his first premiere class win in the 1990 race while Eddie Lawson won the 1992 race that saw American riders claim six of the top seven positions. The 1992 victory was also Lawsons final career MotoGP win.
The Balatonring circuit will be owned by a Hungarian company, Magyar Turizmus Zrt., and Worldwide Circuit Management S.L. of Spain. A newly formed Magyar Turizmus subsidiary will promote any possible MotoGP races at the new track.
The proposed Hungarian Grand Prix may replace the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, China on the MotoGP calendar.
