From aircraft engines to the HP2 Sport
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Jun. 20, 2008
BMWs motorcycle racing history is the subject of a new book written by motojournalists Laurel Allen and Mark Gardiner.

BMW Racing Motorcycles: The Mastery of Speed examines the German manufacturers evolution from aircraft engine builder into a motorcycle racing competitor.

Factory racer Brian Parriott graces the cover on a BMW R1100S, while inside the 176-page book, 130 full color illustrations and photographs showcase the efforts of BMW Motorrad designers and riders.

Allen and Gardiner begin with the companys history including its efforts to rebuild itself following each of the two World Wars, BMWs 20-year championship reign in the world championship sidecar racing and its successes in Endurance World Championship and World Enduro Championship racing.

Californian BMW racer Brian Parriott and cover boy finished sixth in the 2008 Daytona 200.

The book also examines the development of BMWs engineering in producing engines and suspension systems for race competition and how these technologies made their way into production models.

BMW Racing Motorcycles: The Mastery of Speed is published by Whitehorse Press and is available for $29.95.
