Aragon named MotoGP backup until 2015

Spanish circuit appointed official understudy

Dorna Sports has reached an agreement with Motorland Aragon to make the Spanish circuit the MotoGP reserve circuit for the next five years.

The Alcaniz, Spain, track was named the reserve circuit for the 2010 MotoGP season and was called into action to replace the Hungarian Grand Prix after construction delays meant the Balatonring race track wouldnt be ready for the scheduled Sept. 19 event. Under the new agreement, Motorland Aragon will continue to be the alternate circuit, ready to replace any events that cannot be held as scheduled.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was originally scheduled as part of the 2009 season and delays caused by the global economic crisis have forced its cancelation for the second straight year. In 2009 however, MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports had no back-up circuit in place, so the season was reduced to 17 races from the planned 18 events.

The intention of Dorna is to constantly innovate and improve. Its for this reason that when we put in place a reserve circuit we had something new, and which could make a strategic commitment to maintaining the quality of the World Championship, says Carmelo Ezpeleta, chief executive officer of Dorna. The selection of Motorland was for various reasons, one of which was that it was the only circuit that had a standard of quality which could stand in at any moment from April to October, one of the requirements of the World Championship. This has led us to sign an agreement for five years, and in the first year there is already the task of organizing a race, which is not a concern because the circuit is led by people with experience in organizing a Grand Prix.
