AMA-SX: St. Louis results
Dungey led Villopoto by 12 points heading into St. Louis, but unlike last seasons tilt between James Stewart and Chad Reed, the two frontrunners were rarely involved in head-to-head battles through the opening 13 rounds. That changed in St. Louis.
With Rockstar Makita Suzuki s Dungey in the lead on lap nine, Monster Energy Kawasaki s Villopoto attempted a pass that caused both riders to crash. When they remounted, Villopoto was in the lead with Dungey dropping back to third behind Honda Red Bulls Andrew Short.
Dungey moved back into second a lap later to set up what appeared to be a dramatic fight to the finish. That fight was not to be however as Villopoto crashed hard on lap 11, breaking his right leg.
With Villopoto out of the race, Dungey held on for his fifth win of the season. Geico Powersports Hondas Kevin Windham finished second while Short completed the podium in third.
Villopoto underwent surgery to set and stabilize his leg and will need further surgery after the swelling subsides.
With Villopotos season over and San Manuel Yamaha s Josh Hill sitting 77 points back in third place with three rounds remaining, Dungey has clinched the 2010 AMA Supercross Championship. Dungey now joins Jeremy McGrath as the only riders to win the AMA Supercross premier-class title in their rookie seasons.
