James Stewart won his second AMA Supercross event of the season to leapfrog Ryan Villopoto into the championship lead.

Racing before a crowd of 44,394 fans at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Stewart led 18 of 20 laps for the win.

The main event started with Monster Energy Kawasaki s Villopoto taking the holeshot ahead of TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed. Reigning Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey of Rockstar Makita Suzuki was third around the first corner but he was soon passed by Stewart.

James Stewart is back on top of the AMA Supercross standings with a win in Oakland.

Villopoto continued to lead after the first lap but crashed on the second, allowing Stewart to take over the lead. The San Manuel Yamaha rider stayed in front the rest of the race to take the win.

This is a great win for me and the team, said Stewart. Its a long season and its all about winning a championship. The rain tonight made it a little difficult, but I am glad I came out on top.

Reed and Dungey battled most of the race over the last two podium positions. Reed, racing for his own team this season, held onto second for the first half of the race before losing ground to Dungey. The defending champion tried to fend off Reed but the Australian found an opening on the final corner to steal second place.

Ryan Dungey, and James Stewart were joined on the podium by Chad Reed who is racing on his own privateer Honda team.

Villopoto finished in fourth to stay just two points behind Stewart in the season standings.

The 2011 AMA Supercross Championship continues Feb. 5 at Angel Stadium for the second Anaheim, Calif., round.
